Torans are a very traditional textile in northern India. Sewn using a combination of patchwork, applique or embroidery, they are designed to hang as a frieze over a doorway, welcoming both visitors and gods. Below the central panel, the hanging pennants represent mango leaves, a symbol of good fortune.
