Preston Quilt

Priory Patchers in Preston are twinned with a quilting group in Almelo, Holland. Our two towns have been twinned since 1948 but our quilting link began only four years ago.

To mark the 60th Anniversary planned for this year the quilters in Almelo offered to make a commemorative quilt and suggested that we might like to do the same and a small working party was set up plan the response. The decision was made to make a wall hanging showing important places in Preston and to incorporate the bobbin block in the borders, and other local icons in the quilting. Included is a football, the Lightening jet fighter, the English Electric Deltic and the Bond Minicar.

The panels and the block were made and then assembled, with the Charter given to the town in 1179 by Henry II in the centre. It gave freemen of Preston to right to trade in the entire King’s domain, and as he was the King of France too they could sell in Europe without 'fear and favour', long before the Common Market!

The exchange of quilts was planned for the week of the City’s celebrations in March this year during the official visit to Preston of the Mayor and the dignitaries from Almelo.

Almelo Quilt

The quilt from Almelo features diamonds in blue and white, the town crest of the city and in keeping with the Diamond Jubilee of our twinning. Both quilts took pride of place in the art and quilt exhibition in the Minster for the days before the official presentations.

The week was also a social occasion with three ladies from Holland staying with us and a programme of visits to local places of interest was organised. They were taken to all the places featured on the Preston quilt and photographed in situ. A Show and Tell featured of course.

All the members of Priory Patchers took part in the events and some will return to Almelo with the official Preston party in October where both quilts will again be hung side by side.

On its return it is planned that the Almelo quilt will hang in the Mayor's Parlour.
