Faced with an abundance of fabrics in mouthwatering patterns and shades, the designers this month have mixed it up with splashes of colour to create a gorgeous collection of summer projects. Lynne Goldsworthy gives a traditional block a modern twist with her School House Blues quilt, while Judith Hollies has kept it simple with her lovely strip pieced Ebb and Flow quilt  For a distinctly fifties vibe check out

Janet Goddard’s Spotty Dotty quilt (page 18), and for a deceptively simpler-than-it-looks quilt (often a bonus when going for the wow-factor) see this month’s cover star, Connecting 4 design by Kerry Foster. This issue sees the first in our brand-new Block of the Month series. Each month Jemima Schlee will show you a new design, perfect for beginners or to simply add to your block library.
As much as I respect, enjoy and often covert fashion, I don’t often associate it with patchwork. So, it was with great interest on reading Sophie Harper’s interview with designer Blair Stocker (page 44) to discover her background was firmly in the former and has informed her approach to patchwork ever since. A perfect illustration of this influence is her Star quilt pattern (page 49).
