Charming mini quilt projects, reviewed by Davina Thomas.
Mary Mayne is well known as a quilt teacher in the UK and this is her first book. Mary uses scraps of leftover wadding and fabric from her larger projects to create either small individual postcard quilts or to combine them into wall hangings.
The pieces are shown as finished hangings and also often in close up detail. Each mini quilt could be made and displayed on its own until gradually you have enough for a complete wallhanging.
With clear explanations and diagrams, even beginners could tackle many of these hangings.
The eight themes, from flowers, the seaside, Halloween, to Noel, cover all the seasons. Examples such as Sugar and Spice (for babies), or I only went out for a fat quarter (for the sewing room) are absolutely charming.
The mini quilts are assembled with faggotting style stitches but if you preferred you could sew the blocks together as usual and then add wadding and backing. Any of the individual designs could be used to add interest to other quilts too.
All in all, a book that will be well thumbed through and a treasure trove of inspiration for years to come.
