Moderator 4425 forum posts 401 photos | Wow....I got my mag in the post this morning and instantly made a cup of tea....but I didn't have time to read through all of it....too much still to do in putting the lounge back together after papering and painting. I couldn't believe my eyes when I just read that I had a mention on page 45....I am so on cloud nine....thanks Katy...you really made my day, no...my week...no wait....my year. Euphoria or what...it feels just the same as when I'm quilting. Now...fusible wadding Babs...yes - I've used it but only when I've been doing cushion panels...I put it between the cushion top and a thin layer of muslin to back the front....it helps to keep things in place when I do some machine stippling. I don't think I'd have enough confidence to do a whole quilt with it even though I've been sewing for 42 years. And this Mystery Quilt.....ah ha.....just what I needed to fill my already full days....looks like I'm staying up all night while the main man is at work......tee hee. |

385 forum posts 74 photos 8 articles | Tessa, Thanks for input re fusible wadding. Like you have used it for small items and a couple of medium sized wallhangings, which were fine. Figured it might save time. My usual method is to use safety pins - hundreds of them - and a spoon to save my fingers. Anyway, there lies the quilt on my big dining table - layered but not ironed. Hmm . . . . . Wadding is Hobbs 80/20 fusible but have normal 80/20 wadding on standby - in case! Have you ever used 505 adhesive spray to layer a bed quilt? Have used it for wallhangings with success but needed a gas mask. How about staple gun and tacks? Not used one - rumour has it the tacks leave large holes. Going to Malvern Show next week - will make further enquiries as to best method. Input re any of these methods much appreciated from you gals out there . . . . |

Moderator 4425 forum posts 401 photos | Good afternoon Babs... It was in fact Hobbs fusible wadding that I used for small projects, but on larger quilts it always has been and always will be Warm and Natural wadding for me. I just love the way it lays and quilting can be 10 inches apart. As far as the 505 spray goes....I've got a can of it sitting on the cutting table at all times.....and yes, have used it for a king size quilt...worked great....held everything in place until machine quilting was done. Waddings and sprays are really a personal thing.....if you don't try you won't know and learn what's best for you. I've never used staple gun and tacks though....I'd be a bit worried about holes in the fabric. The sun is still shining here in Penrith.....I can't believe my eyes. |

| 41 forum posts 1 photos 25 articles | I have recently had a small quilt from Lady Sew and Sew, it had only been microtacked not quilted, Vanessa told me the tacks were tiny and she was right, she will have it on her stand at Malvern so have a look at it and see - it might be hanging high up, but the tacks are really really tiny, smaller than a size 60 machine needle. I think the old fashioned ones were a bit more like the ones you get on clothes price tags but the new version looks fine. I am sure she probably sells the microtack gadget too as well as using it in her own projects. Don't forget to tell her Davina told you to visit if you do stop by her stand and say hello. It is the first year for 14 years that I will not be at Malvern, I am flying up to Scotland to visit Loch Lomond instead. A couple of years ago I did both but it is a very long drive to Malvern from here and it was a bit too much travelling. When the children were younger we used to go and stay in the Youth Hostel at Malvern and my other half would take them walking on the hills during the day - happy memories. Davina |

385 forum posts 74 photos 8 articles | Thankyou Davina, will have a look at the microtack gadget when I'm at Malvern. Will look out for Vanessa at Lady Sew and Sew and say 'hello' to her on your behalf. My reject blocks arrived - thankyou very much. Will photograph them when quilted. Sounds as though you and family had lovely times at Malvern. The weather is usually pretty good which adds to the pleasure. I originally intended to visit the Loch Lomond Show with my youngest daughter this year as Sally lives in Edinburgh, but my elder daughter Beverley, who lives in Cirencester, wanted me to stay with her for a few days. They tossed a coin and Beverley won! |

385 forum posts 74 photos 8 articles | Or lost, whichever way you look at it! Have completed my latest checkerboard block - using winter colours! Amazing how different it looks from the one in the original quilt and my autumn block. Will post a pic as soon as I finish the leaves - undecided as to fabric for them at the moment . Will post pictures of blocks I created, but decided not to put in the quilt, at some point. You can then see what you've missed! I'm using these as practice blocks for some hand and machine quilting. Time to get back to the garden - been planting pots and flower beds today with loads of annuals to make a fine splash of colour this 'summer.' I've noticed much activity around the blue-tits nesting box. Dying to have a look - but will restrain my curiosity. Might put a blue-tit in the Winter garden quilt - accompanied by a robin or two. It'll add a bit of warmth to the cool colours. |

Moderator 4425 forum posts 401 photos | Hi Davina, When you are at the Loch Lomond show try to stop by and say hello to my boss, Pat Swainson and her side kick, Hazel. Pat owns Just Sew in Penrith and Hazel is her cousin who also works at the shop. When the three of us are working together it's all laughs all day. I'll be holding down the fort while they are away. Of course, I'll have Pat's husband to keep me company - at the shop that is...... Working on the Mystery Quilt for the next day or so....have found some really lovely autumn oranges in my stash and will be using a cream for the background for now. Have fun at the show....someday I'll get there.... |

| 16 forum posts | re microstitch tacks, i bought one of the guns? and tacks from ladysewandsew last year at malvern, i have been very pleased with it ,considering I HATE GADGETS, on their stand they had samples so you could have a go. before the quilt show there was a great write up on this particular one and i decided to go for it after reading the review and actually being able to try before i bought it. on ladysewandsews stand. the tacks are very small and fine and so quick to use, in fact next week at malvern i need more tacks as ive used nearly all mine up. just a note dont use matching colours if your fabric is dark use light coloured tacks and for light fabrics use dark colours, this will make it so much easier when removing them, [special tool available, which will save you snipping your fabric with scissors when taking them out]. hope this helps, its one of those WORKS FOR ME ITEMS.. |

385 forum posts 74 photos 8 articles | Thanks Sue. Ladysewandsew might sell them at a special price at the show. Did you use a plastic mesh thingummybob (it IS early Sunday morning) underneath the quilt? After reading your comments think this will be the method to use. Thanks again! |
