Until 20 March 2010North YorkshireThe Celtic Fringe: Wholecloths of Wales and Scotland
Quilt Museum and Gallery, St Anthony's Hall, Peasholme Green, York, YO1 7PW

The Quilt Museum and Gallery in York, starts its New Year with two exhibitions that show the contrast in decorative tradition between the UK and Iran. The first exhibition, 'The Celtic Fringe' focuses on quilt patterns native to Wales and Scotland.

Traditional wholecloth quilts are generally made from one plain coloured fabric (sometimes two) and their interest lies in the many different patterns that have been stitched – usually by hand. In years past, certain patterns were used again and again in Wales and Scotland, thus giving a recognizable identity to the work. Thus, a quilt with hearts, thistles and fleur de lys might probably have been made in the Scottish Borders while a quilt with broad infilled leaves, hearts and spirals would probably have come from Wales.

Visitors to the Celtic Fringe exhibition will have their own opportunity to try and match design with country but they will also see quilts that have 'associations'. Chief among these are Welsh quilts made especially for the Art Deco wing of Claridges Hotel in London in the 1930s and 'Hawick' quilts made by church guilds in the Scottish Borders around the same period. The Welsh Claridges’ quilts strike a particular resonance since they were commissioned and purchased through the Little Gallery just off Sloane Street in London. The proprietor there, Miss Muriel Rose, was an important figure in the revival of quilting in Wales, during a time of great economic need.

Until 20 March 2010North YorkshireNamad: A Persian Journey in Felt by Bita Ghezelayagh
Quilt Museum and Gallery, St Anthony's Hall, Peasholme Green, York, YO1 7PW

Namad 'A Persian Journey in Felt' looks at the variety and richness of embroidered Turkoman motifs. The Namad exhibition is shown in partnership with the Collins Gallery, Glasgow.

Bita Ghezelayagh, has practised as an architect, interior designer, film producer andcostume designer and now divides her time between London and her native Tehran. In ‘Namad: A Persian Journey in Felt’, she presents a collection of over 20 thick felted and embroidered ‘T’ shaped tunics traditionally worn by Iranian shepherds. The cloaks are made from fleeces sourced in the foothills of the Zagros Mountains and produced by hand felting methods in workshops in Borujerd and Khorramabad.

The tunics, which are both decorative and functional, are used as a canvas by Ghezelayagh to express her memories of growing up in Iran.

The decorative motifs she embroiderers are derived from the Turkoman culture and include geometric forms, stylised tulips and birds and symbols drawn from the folklore of indigenous tribes.

Until 10 April 2010West MidlandsPOP Jann Haworth
Wolverhampton Art Gallery, Lichfield Street, Wolverhampton, WV1 1DU Hollywood-born artist Jann Haworth (b. 1942) is among the few women associated with the Pop Art movement of the 1960s. Her sewn cloth soft sculptures refer to typically American Pop themes such as fast food, film stars, cheerleaders, cowboys and comics, as well as to her experiences of living in England during a period of cultural transformation. Developed in partnership with the artist, this exhibition is the first UK solo show of Haworth's work in a public gallery since 1972. In 1968 Haworth won a Grammy award for her work as co-designer of The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover. POP Jann Haworth contains behind the scenes photographic images of the making of the Sgt. Pepper album set as well as Old Lady I, the life-size sculpture that first appeared in 1967 as a Granny on the album's photo montage cover. The artist has restored several works expressly for the show, offering a rare opportunity to see Haworths early soft sculptures alongside more recent pieces including giant charm bracelets and corset canvases. Wolverhampton's own still-life sculpture, Donuts, Coffee cups & Comics (1962) will be on display alongside other donut sets, for the first time since it was acquired for the Pop Art Collection in 2008. Free Entry to exhibition, gallery open Mon to Sat 10am-5pm. Further information from 01902 552055 or ArtGallery@wolverhampton.gov.uk

27 March - 3 July 2010North YorkshireInspired by the Past: Traditional Practice and Contemporary Conversations
Quilt Museum and Gallery, St Anthony’s Hall, Peasholme Green, York, YO1 7PW
Inspired by the Past shows how historic techniques, style and purpose continue to influence and inspire new textile works. The Quilters' Guild Collection forms the basis of the latest exhibition. It will include one of the Guild's most treasured items, a quilt made in 1887 by a Mrs Mills to celebrate Queen Victoria's Jubilee. Lavishly embellished with embroidery it is pieced in an unusual pattern that includes large flowers made in the Log Cabin technique. Mrs Mills made the quilt in lieu of paying rent to her landlord and its silk and velvet fabrics and embroidery gave real meaning to the words "Victorian fancywork"! One of the Guild's most recent acquisitions, "Pink Boat (Dry Dock 1)" by artist Jo Budd will also be included. Purchased with assistance from the Art Fund and MLA/V & A Purchase Grant Fund, the abstract work was inspired by the industrial landscape and seascapes of the Suffolk Coast
Open 10 am to 4 pm, Tuesday through Saturday (October to March); also Mondays from 10 am to 4 pm between April and September. Admission charges apply. Group bookings of 10 or more are eligible for a 10% discount. Telephone 01904 613 242 or email info@quiltmuseum.org.uk for further information.
27 March - 3 July 2010North Yorkshire"Breakthrough" by Contemporary Quilt
Quilt Museum and Gallery, St Anthony's Hall, Peasholme Green, York, YO1 7PW
Contemporary Quilt is one of four specialist groups affiliated to The Quilters' Guild of the British Isles and its members aim to stretch their abilities in terms of design and technique. The group meets nationally, locally and over the internet and has its own newsletter and regular summer school.
The new juried exhibition challenged Group members to interpret the word "breakthroug". The results varied. Catharine Stonard’s work "Kisses on Concrete", was inspired by plants growing through the X-shaped holes in the concrete surfacing of a car park. "Mapping the Earth" by Alicia Merett focuses on the importance of early maps and the breakthrough of new technology such as aerial photograph and GIS technology. Advances in science also influenced Janet Cook, whose fabric mosaic records the importance of "Perkins Mauve", the first chemical dye developed in 1856.

17-18 April 2010N/AColours of Africa
De Oude Pastorij, Essendonk 3, 2910 Essen, Belgium
Organised by Trapsuutjies Fabric Paint in cooperation with the Town Council of Essen and together with Connection and Yda Walt. Four Textile artists have come together under the name Connection and will exhibit their work during this event. Annette Jeukens, Hella Sluyters, Jacqueline de Jong-van Baalen and Laura Liebenberg have chosen the cylinder as shape for this exhibition. Our guest artist is Yda Walt from South Africa. Yda designs fabric using iconic South African images.Screenprinting and lino-cutting are two of her specialities.
We have an open invitation for everyone who loves and works with fabrics and textiles to make a small work (A4-size) and send it to us. The theme for this is "Rainbow". When he came to power, Nelson Mandela, came to call South Africa the rainbow nation because of the diversity of its people. We have chosen this as our theme because it can be seen as a symbol of hope.
Connection will use all the entries to assemble three-dimensional art objects which will be auctioned during the event in 2010. The money raised in this way will be given to the Chris Hani-crche in Tulbagh, South Africa. The Town Council of Essen supports the Council of Witzenberg in the Cape Province with financial aid, knowledge and know-how. One of the on-going projects is to erect a safe building for the crche in Tulbagh which is currently housed in a shack. The aim is to establish a proper early learning centre for the children.

The Museum of Dartmoor Life, 3 West Street, Okehampton, EX20 1HQ
Kindred Spirits’ second exhibition “Skimming the Surface”. Kindred Spirits is a group of four: Val Thomas, Dot Carter, Vineta Cable and Sarah O'Hora, all of whom now live in Devon. They all come from a background in patchwork and quilting, but also enjoy experimenting with paints, paper, plastics and anything else which looks intriguing. The group came together in 2006 because of a shared interest in exploring stitched textiles and mixed media. Some of you may have been lucky enough to view their first exhibition Myths and Legends held last year at the Festival of Quilts. This new body of work explores tangible and intangible surfaces through mixed media, patchwork and quilting. Sounds like a perfect outing for April and sure to provide inspiration. The museum opening hours are 10.15am to 4.30pm. Admission £1 to support the museum.
