This is the Quay Quilters’ raffle quilt in aid of The Meningitis Research Foundation charity, after a dear member of our group died from this disease last year. The pattern is Gwenfai Rees Griffiths’ “Houston Stars” and every member including beginners made and machine quilted blocks which were joined “quilt-as-you-go”,  project-led by Trish Humphreys and Mavis Middleton. Try different quilting techniques using various feet for the spiral – single or twin needling using the walking foot, couching thicker thread using the braiding foot, satin stitching using the appliqué foot or tailor’s tacking foot. Shapes and Lines, a one day workshop with Sheena Norquay. Expand your quilting vocabulary by using fabric samples as inspiration to create a variety of free motion quilted designs suitable for background quilting around quilted or appliquéd motifs or on geometric shapes.Ten or twelve fabric samples will be bonded to a background and then you will be shown how to use the shapes and lines on the fabrics to draw continuous line, decorative patterns and individual shapes and marks which will be free motion quilted within ribbon like shapes. These can be outlined with satin stitch and the sample can be a small wallhanging or it can be folded to make a clutch bag. Please bring fabric and a sewing machine.
