13 January – 28 April 2012North Yorkshire‘Decline and Revival’ from The Quilters’ Guild Collection
Quilt Museum and Gallery, St. Anthony's Hall, Peasholme Green, City Centre, York YO1 7PW

Quiltmaking is a craft that has had its ‘ups and downs’ especially during the first half of the century when two world wars impacted on the supply of fabrics and other necessary supplies. Add to this the advent of the manufactured quilt and fashionable whims about interiors and bedcoverings and you find a dearth of domestic quilt productivity. By the 1960s and 1970s, however, the pendulum began swinging the other way. Books about patchwork were being written, classes started, and people were actively engaged in learning more about this traditional craft. The new enthusiasm resulted in the formation of The Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles and elsewhere in the world similar groups were formed, making the craft truly international in its appeal.

Decline and Revival’ takes the viewer through the difficult years for quiltmaking and the time when people could only sew quilts with a limited palette of cloth; when utility sometimes superseded design; and when manufactured quilts such as the ‘Comfy’ gained favour.

Open Monday to Saturday 10am–4pm. Admission Adult £6 (Gift Aid £6.60), Concession £5 (Gift Aid £5.50), Guild Member £3 (Gift Aid £3.30), Child £2. Phone 01904 613242 or visit www.quiltmuseum.org.uk for more details.

13 January – 28 April 2012North Yorkshire‘Layers’ by New Horizons Textile Group.
Quilt Museum and Gallery, St. Anthony's Hall, Peasholme Green, City Centre, York YO1 7PW

The New Horizons Textile Group was formed in January 1993 by former students at North Hertfordshire College. Members of the group at that time had completed the City & Guilds course in Patchwork and Quilting and were anxious to keep in touch with each other once the course was completed. Since then, other people have joined the group, making its stitching skills more diverse.

'Layers', the title of their exhibition, gives scope for wide interpretation of design, offering the Group’s members the opportunity to showcase their variety of styles and methods of working.

Open Monday to Saturday 10am–4pm. Admission Adult £6 (Gift Aid £6.60), Concession £5 (Gift Aid £5.50), Guild Member £3 (Gift Aid £3.30), Child £2. Phone 01904 613242 or visit www.quiltmuseum.org.uk for more details.

4 May – 1 September 2012North YorkshireCelebrating Diversity: Quilts from the European Quilt Association
Quilt Museum and Gallery, St Anthony's Hall, Peasholme Green, York YO1 7PW

Member countries of the European Quilt Association (EQA) are coming together for a quilt exhibition that celebrates their diverse lives and cultures. The exhibition harnesses the spirit of solidarity that is sweeping the nation on the lead up to the 2012 Olympic Games and is a great example of the power of stitch as a unifying force.

Each participating country is contributing two wall quilts measuring 1m wide by 2m long following an open brief to demonstrate both traditional and contemporary techniques currently in use. Diversity really is the highlight of this show, as visitors will catch a glimpse of ancient Hungarian motifs from Mária Somogyi Mina, echoes of Pictish standing stones in Sheena Norquay’s Decorative Spirals and an exploration of colour and shape by Beata Keller-‐Kerchner from Switzerland.

Founded in 1989, the EQA aims to promote patchwork and quilting in Europe and to encourage the sharing of knowledge and information between member guilds. At present the EQA has over 60,000 members, the sum of the members of all 18 national guilds.

4 May – 1 September 2012North YorkshireSmall is Beautiful: A collection of small and miniature quilts from the Museum's heritage collection
Quilt Museum and Gallery, St Anthony's Hall, Peasholme Green, York YO1 7PW

Drawing on the Museum’s own heritage collection, Small is Beautiful brings together a display of small quilts including two children’s coverlets from the 19th century and some beautiful examples of miniature quilts including Dorian Walton’s award winning quilt from the Festival of Quilts, 2006.

This collection showcases early examples of roller and block printed fabrics dating back to the late 1780s, the classic fan pattern that was popular with the Amish in the 1920s – 30s, the log cabin design in miniature and a child’s coverlet from the late 19th century with printed panels depicting animals and illustrated verses.

Small is Beautiful would be a wonderful first-‐time exhibition for young quilters who will particularly enjoy seeing the quilts made by Barbara Bailey and Maureen Hoyle displayed on miniature four poster beds, one of which is complete with canopy and tie-‐back curtains.

Open Mon to Sat, 10am–4pm. Admission charges apply. The Museum closes during exhibition changeovers. Please check the website www.quiltmuseum.org.uk or phone 01904 613242 to check on opening times
